On Saturday, Feb. 17, the Angelo State University Rambelles suffered a defeat in a close match against the Midwestern State University Mustangs, 73-75.

Starting the first quarter, the Mustangs took the lead with a jump shot but were tied shortly after with a jump shot by junior forward Madeline Stephens. After the Rambelles took the lead with a jump shot by freshman guard Madi Lumsden, the Mustangs strongly retook it via two jump shots and a 3-pointer. The Rambelles would catch up with a 3-pointer by senior guard Sawyer Lloyd, a layup by sophomore center Keniah Williams and a layup by Stephens for the lead. The Mustangs tied the score with a jump shot, taking the lead with a layup soon after. Following a 3-pointer by Lloyd, the Mustangs scored two free throws for a 14-15 lead. A jump shot by Lumsden and a layup by Williams, followed by a jump shot by the Mustangs, placed the Rambelles ahead by just 1 point. The eighth minute saw the Rambelles maintain the lead with a jump shot by junior guard Madisen Honea and a jump shot by Stephens, with a layup by the Mustangs. The Mustangs finished the first quarter with a jump shot, with the Rambelles leading 22-21.

The start of the second quarter saw the Mustangs take the lead with a jump shot, a layup and a free throw for a 22-26 score. After a couple of free throws by the Mustangs, Stephens scored a layup followed by a jump shot. Following a jump shot by the Mustangs, Stephens followed up with two jump shots, tying the score 30-30. The Mustangs took the lead with a layup, followed by two free throws. After a layup by sophomore guard Olivia Pedigo, the Mustangs finished the second quarter with a 3-pointer and a free throw, leading 32-38.

The Rambelles started off the third quarter with a layup by Stephens, followed by a jump shot by the Mustangs. The ensuing minutes saw the Rmabelles take the lead with two 3-pointers by Lumsden and two jump shots by Lloyd, leaving 44-40. After a layup by sophomore guard Landry Morrow, the Mustangs followed up with a 3-pointer and a layup. Shortly afterward, a layup by Stephens, followed by a 3-pointer by the Mustangs, tied the score 48-48. A short-lived lead would be taken by the Rambelles with a layup by Williams, followed by a layup and jump shot by the Mustangs. The Rambelles once again took the lead, 54-52, with two layups by Stephens. Soon after, Stephens followed up with a free throw alongside a jump shot by Lloyd. After a jump shot by the Mustangs, Stephens finished the third quarter with a 3-pointer, with the Rambelles leading 59-54. 

Honea kicked off the last quarter with two free throws, with the Rambelles leading 61-54. The second minute saw a free throw and layup by the Mustangs alongside two free throws by Stephens and a jump shot by Honea. The Mustangs would fall 1 point short of tying the score after a 3-pointer and layup. After a layup by Lloyd, the Mustangs immediately followed up with a layup of their own, placing the score at 67-66. Following a short standstill, the seventh minute saw the Mustangs take the lead after a layup by Williams, with two jump shots, a layup and a free throw. With the Mustangs leading, the Rambelles were able to tie the score, 73-73, with a layup by Stephens followed by another layup by Pedigo. In the last minute, the Mustangs managed to take the lead with a jump shot, winning them the game, 73-75. 

The Rambelles’ match against the MSU Mustangs was a close one, with their loss against the Mustangs placing them at an 18-9 overall standing. The Rambelles will now prepare to take on the Texas Woman's University Pioneers in Denton on Thursday, Feb. 22.
