On Saturday, Feb. 17, the Angelo State University Rams basketball team defeated the Midwestern State University Mustangs for their second consecutive win, 92-87 going into overtime.

Starting the first half, the Mustangs took the lead with a jump shot; shortly after though, graduate forward Trey Farrer tied the score with a layup. Following a jump shot by the Mustangs, senior forward DJ Basey tied the score 4-4. The fourth minute saw a tug of war for the lead; the Mustangs scored a free throw and a 3-pointer alongside a jump shot by Basey and a 3-pointer by graduate guard Keyshawn Embery-Simpson for a 9-8 lead. Following a layup by the Mustangs, the Rams got a stronger lead with a second 3-pointer by Embery-Simpson and two layups by Basey. The ninth minute saw a jump shot followed by a 3-pointer by senior guard Kevon Godwin for a 21-10 lead. The Mustangs made progress as the following minute saw a jump shot and 3-pointer by the Mustangs, with a layup by redshirt sophomore Shemar Smith. After another layup by Farrer, the Mustangs followed up with three free throws. With a foul by the Mustangs, Smith scored a free throw, followed by a jump shot. Gaining traction, the Mustangs followed up with two 3-pointers and a jump shot for a 28-26 score. The 17th minute saw a jump shot and a 3-pointer by Godwin alongside a jump shot by the Mustangs. After a free throw by the Mustangs, Embery-Simpson finished the half with a 3-pointer, the Rams leading 36-29.

Basey would kick off the second half with a jump shot shortly after starting, followed by a jump shot by the Mustangs. Following a jump shot by Embery-Simpson and a layup by Farrer, the score reached 42-31. The following couple of minutes saw a jump shot and dunk by the Mustangs, alongside a jump shot and 3-pointer by Embery-Simpson with a dunk by Basey. After a free throw by the Mustangs, senior guard Willie Guy locked in a 3-pointer. The following couple of minutes saw the Mustangs score a 3-pointer with a couple of free throws. Guy followed up with his second 3-pointer of the game. Afterwards, the Mustangs locked in a layup and a free throw. The 11th minute saw a free throw by Farrer, followed by a 3-pointer by the Mustangs. After a layup and free throw by the Mustangs, Basey followed up with a jump shot. The following few minutes saw the Mustangs retake the lead with a layup, two free throws and three jump shots for a 58-60 score. The Rams retook the lead with three free throws, two by Farrer and one by Embery-Simpson; however, they'd lose the lead following a 3-pointer by the Mustangs. After a 63-63 tie via a layup by Embery-Simpson, the Mustangs took the lead with two free throws. The final minute saw two free throws by Embery-Simpson and a jump shot by Godwin, with a jump shot by the Mustangs for a 67-67 tie, taking the game into overtime.

The Mustangs kicked off overtime with a 3-pointer, shortly followed by a layup by Farrer. After a jump shot by the Mustangs, Farrer locked in two free throws. The Rams retook the lead with two free throws by Guy, alongside a layup and free throw by Godwin after a jump shot by the Mustangs. The Mustangs tied the score 76-76 with two free throws, taking the game into its second overtime.

Starting its second overtime, the Rams took the lead with two free throws by Guy, followed by a layup by Godwin. The Mustangs once again tied the score, 80-80, with two jump shots, taking the game into its third overtime.

Embery-Simpson kicked off the third overtime with a free throw, followed by two free throws by Farrer for an 83-80 lead. After a layup by the Mustangs, Smith followed up with a free throw. The Mustangs retook the lead with two free throws and a 3-pointer. Two jump shots by Godwin gave the Rams the lead once again. Godwin scored two free throws, followed by two more by Guy. The Rams would ultimately take the win with a 92-87 score.

With the Rams’ victory over the MSU Mustangs, the Rams now have two consecutive wins and a 17-8 overall standing. The Rams will face the Dallas Baptist University Patriots on Thursday, Feb. 22, in an away game.
