Angelo State University's track and field teams displayed remarkable talent and determination at the Texas Tech Jarvis Scott Open in Lubbock on Feb. 9-10, with athletes turning in strong performances across various events.

The event commenced with the women's team making an impact in the pole vault, as junior Camryn Barros reached 3.33 meters for a 13th-place finish, while sophomore Kylyie Paden cleared 3.48 meters to take eighth place. The men's pole vault saw senior Kyle Lumpkins reach 4.71 meters, earning eighth place, although junior Pacer Hill did not clear a height.

In the hurdles, Angelo State showed depth and speed. The women's 60-meter hurdles qualifiers were led by senior Maricia Spence and sophomore Ariyah Samuels, who both advanced to the main event, with Spence finishing strongly in 9th place with a time of 8.43 seconds. The men's 60-meter hurdles featured solid performances, with senior Elvis Kryukov and Kyle Lumpkins advancing from the preliminaries.

Field events also highlighted the team's abilities. In the men's weight throw, junior Cole Paxton threw 17.84 meters to secure fifth place. The women's long jump saw senior Abby Zamzow leap to seventh place with a distance of 5.64 meters, while Spence also competed well in this event.

Sprint events were equally competitive. The women's 400-meter featured junior Shadae Findley finishing in fourth place with a time of 54.21 seconds. The men's 400 saw freshmen Tristan Guerrero and Max Wassmer performing impressively.

The second day continued with success in the field events, as senior Josh Body dominated the men's triple jump with a leap of 15.31 meters, placing fifth. In track events, sophomore Jacent Nyamahunge took second place in the women's 200, showcasing her speed with a time of 23.83 seconds.

Distance events saw freshman Anna Eischen leading the way for Angelo State in the women's 3000 meters, finishing 13th with a time of 11:03.47. The men's side had sophomore Emmanuel Serna completing the 3000 meters in 23rd place.

The meet concluded with the relay events, where Angelo State's women's 4x400 team triumphed, claiming first place. The men's team also performed well, finishing eighth in their 4x400 relay.

With these achievements at the Texas Tech Jarvis Scott Open, Angelo State's track and field teams are looking forward to their next challenge: the 2024 LSC Indoor Championships in Norman, Oklahoma, on Feb. 23-24. This upcoming meet promises to be a pivotal moment in their season, offering an opportunity to build on their successes and compete against some of the best athletes in the conference.
